Kopaonik mountain location and position
Mountain Kopaonik is in central Serbia. Panchichev vrh is the highest peak (2017m). It is about 230km away from Belgrade. You can reach Kopaonik from Yoshanichka Spa or from Brus. The National park Kopaonik was founded in 1981. Kopaonik is the largest mountain in Serbia; it stretches for 75km from north-west to south-east. Its territory occupies a surface of 11 810 hectares in the regions Rashka and Brus.
Kopaonik mountain natural healing and medicinal properties
Climate on Kopaonik is moderate continental. Average annual temperature is about 3.7°C, with about 200 sunny days a year. Within the National park, and in the broader region of Kopaonik, there are thermomineral springs and Spas.Vrnyachka Spa is in the vicinity, as well as Matarushka Spa, Sierin Spa, and on the territory of Kopaonik are the springs of Yoshanichka Spa, Lukovska Spa and Kurshumliyska Spa. Apart from thermal waters, on Kopaonik there are cold low mineral waters. These are low radioactive springs Krchmar waters and Marina waters on an altitude of 1700 – 1950m.
Kopaonik mountain monasteries, churches, cultural and historical monuments
The surroundings of Kopaonik are rich in cultural and historic monuments: the Panchich Mausoleum (situated in the complex with a special purpose; the remnants of a medieval road Kukavitsa (about 4km); the remnants of a medieval mine: the village Zaplanina, the Smokovska river, Kadiyevats, Suvo Rudishte, the Brzets river, the Bela river; the monuments from liberation wars: the monument on Mramor, monuments Student´s grave, Crossroads, the monuments to the victims of fascism in Kriva reka.
The region of Kopaonik from the time of Serbian medieval state (of the dynasties Nemanyich, Lazarevich and Brankovich) is clearly marked by fortifications, the remnants of which are situated on prominent peaks, at one end of the large mountain. The fortresses Zvechan from the 12th century, Maglich from the 14th century, Brvenik from the 14th century, the peak Lab from the 14th century, Koznik from the 15th century. In the surroundings are medieval Serbian monasteries: Studenitsa, Zicha, Sopochani, Gyurdyevi Stupovi, Gradats, Pavlitsa.
Kopaonik mountain natural beauty
The National Park Kopaonik is a real natural reserve. The basis of the park is a mountainous region of an average altitude of 1700m. The National Park has 13 natural reserves: Kozye staze, Vuchak, Mrkonya, Yankova Bara, Gobelya, Barska Bara, Samokovska reka, Metodye, Yelak, Suvo Rudishte, Duboka, Yelovarnik, Bele Stene.
Kopaonik mountain sports and recreational facilities
The mountain Kopaonik is suitable for all kinds of sports preparation. Several hotels have a pool, where swimmers and water-polo players can do their preparations. There are excellent facilities for preparations of tennis players (outdoors and indoors), gyms, basketball, volleyball and handball courts, golf courses, jogging paths.
Kopaonik is the mountain with the best ski pistes in Serbia. There are about 50km of arranged alpine pistes, out of which are 3 FIS pistes for slalom and giant slalom. There are 23 cable car systems, with the capacity of 28 000 skiers per hour, which makes it one of the largest ski centers in this part of Europe. Apart from alpine pistes, in the region of Ravni Kopaonik there are 20km of arranged pistes for nordic skiing. All the pistes are secured by Mountain Rescue Service.
